CLDS Community is a communication system developed for Camden Learning Disability Services (CLDS), specifically for use in the C5 Pancras Building. The project addresses the emotional and logistical needs of visitors navigating a care environment that can often feel stressful or impersonal. The aim was to foster engagement, reduce anxiety and support clearer interaction between visitors, carers and staff.
Approach
Following direct observation and research within the space, we designed a tactile, non-digital toolkit that encouraged open communication. At the heart of the system is a community totem, a physical object that acts as a point of testimony, dialogue and presence in the space. Alongside it, a ring-bound set of colour-coded cards offers a way for users to express needs, ask for directions or simply interact. Blank cards and a built-in slot for a marker pen allow for customisation, making the system adaptable to both individuals and carers.
The system was intentionally kept physical to create a sense of groundedness and inclusion. Unlike digital interfaces, the tactile format invites spontaneous interaction, helping visitors feel present and connected to a shared space.
Outcome
CLDS Community became more than a communication tool. It served as a gentle intervention that helped build a sense of belonging and autonomy. By integrating lived experiences into the design process, the system became a flexible and accessible way to enhance dialogue and human connection within a care-centred environment.
