Cultural Competence

Visual Language · Inforgraphic · Illustration · Documentation

This commissioned project was part of a thesis on cultural competence and craft clusters in India, developed within the Design for Sustainability programme at SCAD by Haleemah Sadiah. The work explored how traditional craft systems can inform sustainable practices within organisations by fostering cultural understanding and community-based knowledge.

Approach
I was responsible for developing the visual language of the thesis. This included designing a cohesive icon system, cover layouts and supporting visual materials for a section of the documentation. The design was informed by research into Indian craft traditions, with a focus on clarity, accessibility and respect for cultural context.

The aim was to complement the academic depth of the project with visual storytelling that felt both rooted and contemporary. The iconography was crafted to reflect key ideas in a simplified but meaningful way, supporting the reader's navigation and understanding of complex themes.

Outcome

The final visuals helped bring structure and warmth to a research-driven document, bridging design with cultural narrative. The outcome contributed to a body of work that champions sustainability through local knowledge and thoughtful communication.
